Reader Q&A: What do I wear with a black sequin dress?

Dear Julie,

I have a bit of an issue on my hands. My boyfriend just told me about his xmas party this friday, and it is semi-formal. I have nothing to wear. I have this short little black sequin dress I bought recently from the Juniors department at Dillard's. It's got a small amount of sleeves to it and a slit down the chest area. It's very simple for a sequin dress. Could I purchase black tights and purchase a pair of those ankle boots and wear with it? I wouldn't know which boots to buy. If you don't think that sounds like a good idea, do you have any suggestions? Anything will help!

Thank you!

Lauren

Hi Lauren,

I myself have a short, black sequin dress I bought at Forever 21 to wear in LA earlier this year. If it's short, I would definitely wear black tights with it - no question (besides it looking chic, it's starting to get downright cold!). Since it's a Christmas party, I might opt for heels rather than flats, but that's just my preference on dressing things up a little. I would stick with black also and just make sure the style is very simple (you don't want to take away from those darling sequins!). Pay attention to the fabric when shopping. Old-fashioned leather might look better than suede, velvet, etc. Like I said, keep it simple because you don't want to outshine the dress with your shoes. Hope this helps and have so much fun at the party!

P.S. Here's a great pair from Nine West (a fav brand!) I found on PiperLime.com - on sale for just $69.99. The ruching is so chic and it even has a side zipper!
